The auspicious Ganga Saptami was celebrated at Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills on Saturday, 3 May 2025. Ganga Arati commenced at 4pm followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised readings from the book, Mother Ganga by Sri Swami Sivananda, Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message, Kirtans, Bhajans and a recitation of the Ganga Stotram.

Sri Swami Sivananda says that Ganga Saptami marks the day the sacred waters of the Ganga descended from the heavens. Lord Siva received the Ganga's waters in His matted locks on this day. The Master considered the Ganga to be the most sacred river of India.

In the reading entitled, “Lord Siva Receives the Ganga”, from the book, Mother Ganga, the Master said, “Again, Bhagiratha sat doing rigorous penance for a full hundred years. It is needless to say that Lord Siva, the Protector of all His devotees, was immensely pleased with the king and readily accepted to check and control Ganga through His matted locks. With surge, fury and foam, Ganga began to descend from the celestial regions. Flashes of lightning, thunders from clouds, and the uncontrollable flow seemed as if a deluge was about to devour the whole world. But Lord Siva coolly received Her in His matted locks and let Her drip over Him. This is the Ganga Saptami Day”.

In the poem, “Gangotri”, the Master exudes love and admiration for the beautiful Gangotri. He said:

GANGOTRI

This is the Himalayas

In the Tehri-Garhwal State.

The Ganga’s source is here.

Ganga flows out of a cow’s mouth.

It is called Gaumukh.

It is actually an ice cave.

The temple contains images of Ganga, Bhagirathi.

Sadhus stay here

And practise meditation.

It is full of spiritual vibrations.

O Mother Bhagirathi, O Ganga,

Thou givest boons to all.

Thou art the remover of all miseries.

Thou art the purifier of all sinners.

Thou art the mistress of this world.

Thou art the nourisher of all.

Prostrations unto Thee, O Mother.

Om Namo Bhagavati Ganga Rani”.

In the following poem, Sri Gurudev refers to Mother Ganga’s divinity, beauty and majestic Aura.

QUEEN OF ALL RIVERS

Queen of all rivers! O Mother Ganga Rani!

Adorations and prostrations unto Thee, Ganga Rani!

Always keep me near Thee, Ganga Rani. Thou art very, very dear to me, Ganga Rani.

I dive in Thee several times Ganga Rani.

I drink daily Ganga water, Ganga Rani.

Thou art my very life, Ganga Rani.

You refresh my heart, Ganga Rani.

How charming are Thy splashes, Ganga Rani.

Thy blue colour reminds me always of Lord Krishna, Ganga Rani.

Thou art a potent germicide, Ganga Rani.

No microbe can live in Thee, Ganga Rani.

This is the laboratory report of scientists, Ganga Rani.

Sadhus and Sannyasins like to live on Thy banks, Ganga Rani.

Sitting for five minutes on Thy bank gives inspiration and peace, Ganga Rani.

Again and again, salutations unto Thee, O Ganga Rani.

Bless me, guide me, protect me, Ganga Rani”.

Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message focused on the importance of dispassion and obedience. Upon his insistence to visit Sri Gurudev for the first time, the Master agreed. Pujya Swamiji missed his friends back home whilst in Rishikesh. He said to Sri Gurudev that he did not possess qualifications and that he should return home, to which the Master said, “They will come”. Sri Gurudev told Pujya Swamiji to have a cold bath in the Ganga.  The Master was very stern. No one was to follow him, again indicative of his taciturn nature at that time. On Pujya Swamiji’s subsequent visit to the Ashram in Rishikesh, the Master talked and joked more and had the bearing of a grandfather. Sri Gurudev showed immense compassion towards Pujya Swamiji. Pujya Swamiji’s strong conviction and steadfast nature is evident when he was offered a teaching post back home in Estcourt. However, he refused the post as he had made a commitment to take up a post at FOSA Settlement. He recounted Sri Gurudev’s instruction to him to open a branch in South Africa and to do some silent work. His deep contemplation over the instruction, and his strong desire to obey the Master, led him to say, “If it succeeds, it is all your will; if it fails it is all your will”. Pujya Swamiji’s unconditional loyalty, obedience and dedication to the Master’s Mission are overtly evident, as the Society has grown significantly since its humble beginnings in this country.

The mellifluous Ganga Stotram that was beautifully recited, is a sacred hymn praising the Goddess Ganga, the Divine River. “Stotram” is a Sanskrit word meaning “hymn” or “prayer”. It emphasises the river's purity, power, and ability to cleanse and uplift. It is a prayer for spiritual liberation and well-being, praising the river's divine nature and seeking its blessings. The hymn praises Ganga's divine qualities and describes Her as a divine river from heaven, a saviour of the three worlds, pure, and adorned on the head of Lord Siva. The hymn seeks Ganga's blessings, and emphasises spiritual liberation. It is considered powerful and beneficial for reciting or listening and fosters spiritual growth.

May the blessings of Mother Ganga, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda be upon us all!

The Pietermaritzburg Branch hosted the Society’s Centenary Celebrations and Sri Hanuman Jayanti jointly at Sivanandashram, Northdale, Pietermaritzburg. The day’s programme commenced with the 108 recitals of the Sri Hanuman Chalisa at 5am and concluded after midday. Ganga Arati commenced at 3pm followed by Satsang. The Centenary Celebrations at the Pietermaritzburg Branch focused on Pujya Swamiji’s 100th birth anniversary, his life and legacies, as this year marks Pujya Swamiji’s 100th birthday, having been born on 10 July 1924.

The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, Sri Gurudev’s audio message, a message from the Society, a dance, the Sivananda Arati and a children’s item.

The message from the Society focused on the life and legacies of Pujya Swamiji, and how we can sustain Pujya Swamiji’s vision and work. This is evident in, “Today we are all beneficiaries of this great spiritual wealth. All that is required of us is faith, obedience, loyalty, devotion, and keen aspiration for spiritual progress. How do we honour a great being like Swami Sahajananda? One of the ways is to obey him and follow the path he chalked out for us; to have faith that what he chose for us was for our best interest. Swamiji stated that perfect obedience is the same as perfect self-surrender, and that obedience is greater than reverence. Let us obey some simple rules to improve our lives. Pujya Swamiji stated, “Obedience is the most important law of life. It has to be practised not only in spiritual institutions, but also at home, on the road while driving, and at one’s place of work. Health rules also have to be observed. Check yourself carefully every day and see where you are faltering. Our Divine Master’s books will be your guide”.

Referring to our roles and responsibilities, the message stated, “Pujya Swamiji has said that if we cannot be obedient as adults, how can we expect our children to obey us? It is not enough to be associated with a saint or with an Ashram. We must all become ambassadors of our Master by living a Divine Life, with wholesome values and putting God first. We must be sincere. In putting God first, let us all attempt to repeat the Divine Name as often as possible. Take up any Mantra that appeals to us, like Om Nama Sivaya, or the Om Sri Ram Jay Ram Jay Jay Ram Mantra, and make a habit of repeating the Mantra as often as possible. Our saints have told us how the Mantra offers protection, and brings innumerable other benefits in our lives. Pujya Swamiji lived a life of faith and self-surrender, and coincidentally this is the title of the first book that Swamiji had written in 1996. We invite all to obtain a copy of this booklet from our bookstall. It is filled with great power. Pujya Swamiji said that the knowledge came directly from Sri Gurudev within, as he typed the booklet onto the computer without any draft. It is sure to inspire and uplift all readers in this age that is plagued by the challenges of Kali Yuga”.

Sri Swami Sivananda’s farewell audio message after Pujya Swamiji’s Sannyas initiation, on 10 April 1956, paid glowing tributes to Pujya Swamiji. (As this message has been replicated in several other reports, snippets are herewith quoted). Sri Gurudev, in reference to Pujya Swamiji, said, “Swami Sahajananda is styled as the spiritual king of South Africa, Durban. He is also called the African Chota Guru. He does not want anything. He is a silent worker. He is a man of renunciation, Vairagya and meditation. He is a very good organiser. He has organised some 20 branches of the Divine Life Society in South Africa…. He is established in Sahaja Avastha…. He does not forget Brahman when he is working. He has got double consciousness. He is resting in his Satchidananda Swarupa and he is utilising his mind and Indriyas (senses) for the good of humanity. He likes Sahaja Avastha. He is in Sahaja Avastha. In the scriptures you will find that any man who attempts to practise Yoga is also a Yogi and a Yogarudha,… So, he who is attempting to be established in Sahaja Avastha is also a Sahaja Avastha Yogi…;. He is a thinker. He has in Durban a small press for the dissemination of knowledge, and the Path to God-Realisation is his magazine, running for three or four years……He will now go with redoubled energy, charged with Himalayan vibrations and Mother Ganga’s Grace, and will work like a lion, Vedanta Kesari, Yoga Kesari…..His devotion to teacher is unique. He has a pure heart. Such a Yogi is now going from here and he will thrill the whole of Africa, and again he will come. He has the spirit of renunciation. He has given his whole property to me. Just see his noble qualities, devotion, discipline, Shanti and humility”.

The Master’s high praise for Pujya Swamiji’s Yogic discipline is evident in his reference to Pujya Swamiji as a Yogabhrashta, and that his heart is full of renunciation, Vairagya and meditation, which are the key to open the chambers of the heart, the Atmic store.

The children’s musical item was a tribute to Sri Swami Sahajananda, describing him as the epitome of loyalty, obedience and devotion.  The song, “By the Grace of Vayudev” compared Pujya Swamiji’s devotion to Sri Gurudev, synonymous to Sri Hanuman’s devotion to Lord Rama. The words, “If loyalty, obedience and devotion were the hallmarks of this sage, then Param Pujya Sri Swamiji, is the Hanuman of this age”, reminded us of the importance of especially loyalty and obedience to the spiritual instructions of Pujya Swamiji. The line, “By the Grace of Vayudev, Anjani Ma gave birth to the greatest servant who walked upon this earth”, resonates with deep meaning. The item described Pujya Swamiji as the “Hanuman of this age”, a fitting tribute to one of the greatest Karma Yogis amongst spiritual giants in this country. The item also recounted the love Pujya Swamiji had for Sri Gurudev and Mother Ganga. The song, “From the Feet of Maha Vishnu”, compared Pujya Swamiji’s ‘arduous toil to lure Mother Ganga to grace our African soils, and to that of Bhagirath who pleaded to Lord Vishnu to permit Mother Ganga to leave the heavens and come to earth.

The Pietermaritzburg Branch is commended on their fine standard of organisation, dedication and Guru Bhakti in organising this Centenary Celebrations’ function in honour of Pujya Swamiji. The devotees’ quiet sense of dignity, aspiration for excellence and attention to detail in all aspects of the organisation, are worthy of commendation. We express deep appreciation and gratitude to the Branch.

May Our Divine Master and Pujya Swamiji bless all abundantly.

The 69th Sannyas Anniversary of Pujya Swamiji was observed at Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills, with a morning Sadhana programme from 6am to 6.25am, after which devotees took Darshan at Sahaja Kutir, Pujya Swamiji’s kutir and the Sivananda Sahajananda Diamond Jubilee Hall. Ganga Arati commenced at 5.30pm followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Pujya Swamiji’s audio message, Kirtans, Bhajans and reading of Sri Gurudev’s farewell message after Pujya Swamiji was initiated into the holy order of Sannyas on 10 April 1956.

Pujya Swamiji, in his audio message, focused on the theme of fear. He said that he had immense fear, and explained as follows, “…the day I took Sannyas, I could suddenly feel that I was courageous”, because Gurudev showered this Grace upon Pujya Swamiji.  He said that through complete surrender to God and that “through spiritual practices, you can overcome everything and turn your life upside down”. When we turn to God, marvelous things happen. We should welcome problems and face them courageously. “If you see God in all names and forms, then everything can be overcome”. If one’s surrender is incomplete, the desired results will not be achieved. He used the analogy of the devotee who called for God, but when God went to help him, the devotee had a stone in his hand. The message provided hope and direction to us all, especially now when the challenges of the modern world afflict us repeatedly, and we begin to lose hope, become despondent and disillusioned.

Sri Swami Sivananda’s glowing farewell message on the occasion of Pujya Swamiji’s Sannyas initiation 69 years ago, is resplendent with praise and admiration for Pujya Swamiji. The Master said, “Swami Sahajananda is styled as the spiritual king of South Africa, Durban. He is also called the African Chota Guru. He does not want anything. He is a silent worker. He is a man of renunciation, Vairagya and meditation. He is a very good organiser. He has organised some 20 branches of the Divine Life Society in South Africa”. Referring to Pujya Swamiji’s spiritual merits, Sri Gurudev said, “There is Savikalpa Samadhi, and then comes Nirvikalpa Samadhi, and then comes Sahaja Avastha. He is established in Sahaja Avastha. He does not forget Brahman when he is working. He has got double consciousness. He is resting in his Satchidananda Swarupa and he is utilising his mind and Indriyas (senses) for the good of humanity”.

The Master’s eulogy in the following words was prophetic, as Pujya Swamiji ignited in South Africa, a spiritual flame that grows daily and has touched millions of lives by way of spiritual growth, humanitarian initiatives and poverty alleviation programmes. The Master said, “Swami Sahajananda is spiritual king of Durban, a great organiser, a great supporter, a pillar of the Divine Life Society”. This is again resonant in, “He is a thinker. He has in Durban a small press for the dissemination of knowledge, and the Path to God-Realisation is his magazine, running for three or four years. What more can you expect from a small boy Swami? He has done everything. He will now go with redoubled energy, charged with Himalayan vibrations and Mother Ganga’s Grace and will work like a lion, Vedanta Kesari, Yoga Kesari. All these titles a man deserves when he becomes a Yogi. When a man becomes God, any number of titles are not enough. His devotion to teacher is unique. He has a pure heart. Such a Yogi is now going from here and he will thrill the whole of Africa, and again he will come. He has the spirit of renunciation. He has given his whole property to me. Just see his noble qualities, devotion, discipline, Shanti and humility”.

The Master’s high praise for Pujya Swamiji’s Yogic discipline is evident in, “He is a young Yogi; a Yogabhrashta. He was a Swami in his previous birth, so at such a young age his heart is full of renunciation, Vairagya and meditation, which are the key to open the chambers of the heart, the Atmic store. It is not so easy to get renunciation and Vairagya. That man lives in vain who has got no Vairagya, no renunciation, no spirit of selfless service. God has given you in this birth a little wisdom. Yoga and Vedanta are complimentary.

“There is no wisdom without Yoga. There is no wisdom without Bhakti. All are complementary. Vedanta without Bhakti is dry, and Bhakti without wisdom is not complete or perfect. So let us pray for the health, and long life of this small Yogi full of strength”.

Indeed, Pujya Swamiji has touched the hearts and souls of many, as is evident in Sri Swami Sivananda’s description of Pujya Swamiji, “One who can transform the materialistic intellect of the whole of South Africa; what tremendous influence, what tremendous purity, what tremendous Yogic power, what tremendous meditation, his spiritual aura, selfless aura!”

We have observed many, many Sannyas Anniversaries of Pujya Swami Sahajananda. What implications do these spiritual observances have for us? We can glean lessons from Sri Gurudev’s message, his teachings, and Pujya Swamiji’s life and legacies, and translate these into practical realities of truth, service, spiritual aspirations and attempts at leading a divine life. Sri Santhanagopal, in his tribute, “An Unforgettable Saint”, lends credence to this view, when he said, “Swamiji’s disciples adore him. They pour their affection, regard, and money in great abundance. Swamiji can easily afford to build great Ashrams of opulence, grandeur and luxury, like many Ashrams in India and abroad. Swamiji’s Ashrams are simple and functional and absolutely clean and neat. There is never any extravagance or show. One can easily see divinity in the place and the people and in their actions, all unobtrusively guided by this incredible saint who does everything in the name of his Divine Master.

“I am afraid to salute him. Because I know that he would immediately prostrate towards me. If the rains fall, if the flowers bloom, if the birds sing, if children smile in happiness and in innocence, I know why.

“It is because there are persons like Swami Sahajananda living amongst us, for our own sake”.

The most auspicious Ram Navami was celebrated at all Sivanandashrams of the Society. This report focuses on the celebrations at both Sivananda International Cultural Centre (SICC) and Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills.

Hundreds of devotees, well-wishers and donors gathered at SICC for the celebration which was held jointly with our Sivananda Day Satsang. Ganga Arati commenced at 8.30am followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans and Bhajans glorifying Lord Rama, a reading, Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message and a Ramayan recital.

In the Ram Navami message, Sri Swami Sivananda, referring to the magnanimous personality of Lord Rama, said, “Deep and unfathomable like the ocean, firm and steadfast like the Himalayas, valiant like Vishnu, He was the joy of Kaushalya. Though fierce like fire on the battlefield, He was calm like the cool breeze of the Mandara Hills, patient like Mother Earth, bounteous like Kubera the God of Wealth, and righteous like Dharma, the Lord of Justice Himself. In pain or grief of His people, His heart swiftly sympathised with the sufferer. In the festive scenes which held them in joy, He, like a father shared their joy. By His honour and heroism, as well as by His gentleness and love for his subjects, He endeared himself to the heart of His people”.

The Master exhorts us, when he said, “Establish the Rama Rajya in yourself; when each individual thus converts himself into a walking, talking and moving Ram Rajya, then the entire world will be converted into one huge Rama Rajya. The essentials of Rama Rajya have been wonderfully laid before you in the Ramayana. Truth, purity, an indomitable will to conquer evil, an unshakable faith in and adherence to Dharma, obedience, forbearance, sympathy and love, these constitute Lord Rama. With the birth of these in you, be sure that Lord Rama has enthroned Himself in your heart. Ramayana is replete with lessons which every aspirant should learn and assimilate”.

The Master’s advice to women is that they should emulate the example of Mother Sita. He said, “Every woman should get before herself the ideal of Sita to perfection. Pativrata Dharma is the only Dharma for a woman. She need not perform austerities or observe other Vratas. She need not practise Yoga or engage herself in worship of the Lord. If a woman sticks to this one Pativrata Dharma, she gets Mukti easily. Her might then becomes unchallengeable. Even gods will bow to her, and the elements will obey her commands. O fashionable woman, O immodest lady, turn away from the path which leads to ruin; follow Sita's example. You will be ever remembered, even as Sita is”.

Pujya Swamiji’s audio message, in response to questions to Pujya Swamiji, focused on the double consciousness of saints and Avatars. He said, “Deep inside they know who they are, but they play on the human stage also….”. He explained that when God comes to this earth, then He is subject to His own laws and acts like a human being, to illustrate to humans the difference between Dharma and Adharma. Lord Rama asked for help of others “but He was all powerful inwardly”. Pujya Swamiji mentioned that even Sri Gurudev said that he worries about certain things, but in essence he is peace and bliss. Pujya Swamiji continued, “We are searching for happiness, unbroken happiness, because you know there is something deep inside, otherwise you won’t be searching for it”. Saints and Avatars have Maya under their control and know everything that is going on. Sri Gurudev would have a quick glance and tell one about oneself. “For all these questions, meditation is the best answer”, said Pujya Swamiji.

The Phoenix Branches of the Society did a beautiful and mellifluous recital of the Ramayana. Vibrant, soulful and inspiring, the Bhakti in the offering was evident. Complemented by the inspiring Kirtans and Bhajans in praise of Lord Rama, the programme was spiritually elevating.

The evening’s Ram Navami celebration at Sivanandashram commenced with Ganga Arati at 5.30pm and was followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, a message from Sri Swami Sivananda and a recital from the Ramayana.

In the message, Glory of the Ramayana by Sri Swami Sivananda, Valmiki once asked Sage Narada, “O Venerable Rishi, please tell me whether there is a perfect man in this world, who is at once virtuous, brave, dutiful, truthful, noble, steadfast in duty and kind to all beings”.  Rishi Narada replied, “There is such a one, a prince of Ikshvaku's line, named Sri Rama. He is virtuous, brave, gentle and wise. He is a great hero. He loves his subjects immensely. He is a protector of Dharma. He is firm and steadfast. He is just and liberal. He is well versed in the Vedas and in the science of arms. He is unique in the possession of virtues and matchless in beauty. He is an obedient son, a kind brother, loving husband, a faithful friend, an ideal king, a merciful enemy, and a lover of all living beings. All people adore Him’”.

In respect of the origin of the Ramayana, Sri Swami Sivananda said, “…Brahma vanished after inspiring the poet with the knowledge of Sri Rama's whole story. Valmiki sat down in meditation and saw every event in Sri Rama's story in detail in his Yogic vision. Then he began to write the Ramayana. The melody of the Ramayana was born from a heart of love and pity for the wounded bird. The Ramayana is a marvellous book which contains the essence of all Vedas and all sacred scriptures. It is a treasure for man. It is a reservoir which contains the nectar of immortality. It delineates the character of a son who renounces the throne, the pleasures of the senses and the world in order to fulfil the words of His father, and lives in the forest for a period of fourteen years. The Ramayana depicts the character of a father who sends even his most beloved son into exile in order to keep up his word. It delineates the character of an ideal, chaste wife, who is devoted to Her husband till the end of Her life, who shares the adversities of Her husband and serves Him untiringly in the forest, and who also regards Her husband as God himself”.

The deeply inspiring Ramayana recital and melodious Kirtans and Bhajans were a fitting offering to Lord Rama during the evening’s Satsang as well.

The take-home message for us all from this Ram Navami is aptly captured by the Master, “Every year Sri Ram Navami celebrations are a boon and a blessing to all. They serve to keep bright and alive the lofty examples, by following which, life on earth becomes fruitful. Attend the celebrations with the right and proper feeling and benefit fully. Resolve from this Rama Navami Day to take a daily dip in the life-redeeming waters of the Ramayana. Read a small portion of the holy scripture every day. You will be constantly inspired. You will derive valuable guidance in your day-to-day life. You will, without fail imbibe in your own being the lofty qualities embodied therein. Within a short time, you will surely find yourself a different person, filled with the divine spirit of truth and purity. Peace, joy and prosperity will then be yours, here and hereafter. May the Grace and blessings of Lord Rama be upon all for their peace, prosperity, good health and spiritual illumination!”

The most recent Centenary Celebrations’ function was held at the Pretoria Chinese School in Wingate, Pretoria East, on Saturday, 29 March 2025. Ganga Arati commenced at 2.50pm followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, a children’s item, a play, an address by the Deputy Consul General of India in Johannesburg and a message from the Society. The Centenary Celebrations this year focused on Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s 100th birth anniversary, and Pujya Swamiji as an ideal disciple of Sri Swami Sivananda. Pujya Swami Sahajananda, Spiritual Head of Divine Life Society of South Africa, led the Society with distinction for 58 years, and took Mahasamadhi on 10 December 2007. In obedience to our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda, and in the spirit of selfless service to the country, Pujya Swamiji initiated humanitarian projects to alleviate poverty, illiteracy and suffering in this country. Completed projects total approximately 700 to date. South Africa will not be able to repay this spiritual giant for these inestimable contributions which enriched the country greatly. This celebration, and all the other Satsangs and programmes this year, are a miniscule attempt at glorifying the contributions of this illustrious son of South Africa, so that his legacy continues to nourish us all.

The message from the Society captured some of Pujya Swamiji’s multifarious contributions. This is evident in, “Pujya Swamiji dedicated his entire life to promote the work and teachings of Sri Swami Sivananda. He set up Ashrams for our spiritual sustenance, printed and distributed the Master’s books far and wide, and initiated humanitarian projects to give devotees the opportunity to worship God by serving fellow man. His visionary leadership in establishing the Sivananda Sunlit Path Schools’ Programme to assist learners cope with drug addiction and social ills, the Sivananda Ghat, poor feeding programmes for thousands of school children daily, grocery hamper distributions to the needy, our clinics and numerous educational, social and humanitarian initiatives, Monthly Yoga Camps, conduct of monthly Sivananda Day Satsangs, establishment of our beautiful Ashrams, and the administration of our five free sewing schools (wherein over 11 000 learners have graduated thus far), are the various love offerings that were made by this gentle saint at the feet of our Divine Master”.

Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message focused on the power of positive relationships as a way to reach God. In a relationship between husband and wife, each should assist the other to aspire for God. If this is not understood by any one of the spouses, the result is disharmony and a “tug-o-war” for domination. Pujya Swamiji said that we should use the person next to us to go towards God. He quoted the case of Edgar Casey, author of the book, Many Mansions. The author could look into the lives of others, and soon came to realise that the Law of Karma and Reincarnation have a strong bearing on our lives. Hence, we should bear with each other and “settle our debts, and not make fresh Karma”. God doesn’t punish anyone. It is the Law of Karma that has a bearing on our lives. Pujya Swamiji said that we should use misfortunes and calamities to go towards God. We should be in tune with God, by repeating the Divine Name and calling for God. If we call for God and Gurudev in the small things, wonderful things will happen. If we call sincerely, God will give us the strength to overcome difficulties.

The inspiring and confident presentation of the item, “Sri Gurudev Says”, by our Spiritual Darlings (children), left an indelible impression on listeners. Our Spiritual Darlings reminded us, young and old, of these timeless and profound thoughts. Herewith a few excerpts: “God is my real father, mother, friend and guide; Swami Sivananda was a saint who saw God and taught others also how to see Him; When God is near, why should I fear? God is ever with me and lives in my heart; A good action will bring me happiness and joy, a bad action will bring me pain”. These profound sayings were composed by Pujya Swamiji Sahajananda and reinforces the teachings contained in the Vedas

The play, Back to Basics which served as a reminder of Ashram decorum and rules, emphasising also the core teachings of the Master, was brilliantly enacted by young adults and senior devotees. The play focused on the importance of the Ram Bhajans in our Satsangs, rules governing discipline, silence, posture and etiquette during Satsangs and Ganga Arati, and how to overcome depression through constant and regular prayer and surrender to the Divine. The play concluded with a gentle reminder to all devotees to conduct themselves as if our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda are looking at us; because they are indeed always present. Referring to the watchful eye of our Divine Master, Pujya Swamiji said, ‘Even now he is controlling and looking after everything’”.

The beautifully executed dances by Shivohum Fine Arts captivated the attention of many, and added colour and divinity to the function. It goes without saying that the melodious Bhajans and Kirtans added divine lustre to the programme. All in all, a spiritual feast!

The Deputy Consul General of India in Johannesburg, the Honourable Sri Harish Kumar, in his address paid tribute to Sri Swami Sivananda’s “vision of spirituality”. He also quoted the Master when he (Sri Swami Sivananda) said, “Satsang is the greatest purifier”. He applauded Pujya Swamiji’s multifarious spiritual and humanitarian initiatives, which are a testament to Pujya Swamiji’s legacy. He said that during a visit to the Master’s Ashram in Rishikesh during his youth, he was given one of the Master’s books which had a profound impact on his life. He found resonance in the Master’s dictum that “human life must be a Divine Life”. Referring to Pujya Swamiji’s service activities, he said that these self-help and humanitarian projects are an excellent example of Vasudeva Kutumbakam, meaning that the world is one family, emphasising the concept of unity, harmony and interconnectedness among all living beings. Pujya Swamiji’s contributions have had a significant impact on the world around us.

We express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to our Pretoria Satsang Organising Committee and devotees for their outstanding efforts, high standards, and meticulous organisation in bringing the message of Divine Life and the teachings of Sri Swami Sivananda and the legacies of Pujya Swami Sahajananda to donors, devotees and well-wishers of Pretoria. In so doing, they have helped in sustaining Sri Gurudev’s and Pujya Swamiji’s legacies. Their dedication, attention to detail and commitment to excellence have truly stood out. Their hard work and dedication are highly inspiring and commendable. It is abundantly clear that they expressed their sincere Guru Bhakti, and gave their entire energies, abilities, commitment and hearts to every aspect of this celebration.

May our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda bless us all.

Divine Life Society of South Africa’s latest Centenary Celebrations’ function was hosted by the Newlands West Branch on Sunday, 23 March 2025, at the Hillgrove Vishnu Shakti Mandir (AMF Hall), in Hillgrove, Newlands West. The programme commenced with Ganga Arati at 9.30am, followed by Satsang at 10am. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, a message from the Society, a video on the Society’s service activities, a presentation on the history of the Newlands West Branch and motivational talk, as well as a dance item. In marking the Centenary Celebrations over 2024 and 2025, emphasis is given in 2025, to Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s 100th birth anniversary. Pujya Swamiji was born on 10 July 1925 and led Divine Life Society of South Africa from humble beginnings, to the multi-faceted, iconic and multi-dimensional organisation it is today – one of the foremost of Hindu organisations in South Africa.

Newlands has a special significance in Pujya Swamiji’s life, as is evident in the following message by the Society, “Today, we have gathered to celebrate the life of Pujya Swami Sahajananda, Spiritual Head of Divine Life Society of South Africa. It is indeed a joyful event to celebrate a birthday, but a centenary is even more special. We are also very fortunate that we are having this celebration in Newlands, as not far from here was the FOSA settlement where Pujya Swamiji worked in his youth, and started training a few devotees to repeat Mantras and to conduct Satsang. In 1949, after reflecting on the instructions from Sri Swami Sivananda, our Swamiji took the decision at the FOSA gates to establish the Divine Life Society here in South Africa. Newlands has been blessed by Pujya Swamiji’s presence. At the FOSA gate Swamiji said to himself that it is Sri Gurudev who is starting the Divine Life Society, and if it succeeds, it is his will, and if it fails, it is also his will. Today we are seeing Sri Gurudev’s Grace unfolding”.

The message from the Society recounted Sri Gurudev’s and Pujya Swamiji’s enormous contributions to all across the world, and Pujya Swamiji’s unconditional obedience and loyalty to the Divine Master. This is evident in, “The fact that all of us are here, and that millions of households around South Africa and many countries around the world have a copy of one or more of Swami Sivananda’s books, is only because of this one life that we are celebrating today. After taking the Master as His Guru, Swamiji never questioned or doubted anything that Gurudev did. He lived only to propagate the Divine Master’s work and to do the Divine Master’s will. With supreme self-surrender, Swamiji offered his all to our Gurudev, so much so that they became one. Swamiji decrypted the phrase ‘learn to type and make tea’ (which was the original instruction our beloved Gurudev gave to Swamiji), and found the treasure that it held. Beloved Gurudev stated that he works through Swami Sahajananda. Swamiji made himself a perfect instrument for the Lord to work through. Millions of books were published and distributed, and silently scores of service activities and nation building projects went on unnoticed for decades”.

The Society’s Service Activities’ video captured the Master’s and Pujya Swamiji’s lives and legacies with distinction, such that a person coming into contact with the Society for the first time, will be deeply inspired. It also presented a comprehensive account of the Society’s multifarious activities in the fields of promotion of spirituality, Hinduism, poverty alleviation, eradication of social ills, the Sivananda Ghat, its magnificent Sivananda International Cultural Centre (SICC), the Sunlit Path Centre in Chatsworth, our Yoga Camps and Yoga Retreats, self-help projects and its building of a mini-hospital, schools, classrooms, Peace Centres and Early Childhood Development centres. The gripping visuals, dynamic commentaries, images and videos of Pujya Swamiji, brought life and divinity to the fore. A highly inspirational, spiritually stimulating and awe-inspiring video indeed!

A youth of the Branch aptly captured the history of the Newlands West Branch in his presentation. He said, “From humble beginnings, commencing with Satsangs in devotees’ homes, the Newlands West Branch of Divine Life Society of South Africa is pleased to announce that it celebrated its 26th Anniversary in February this year. Today we wish to pay tribute to the pioneer members who spent countless hours spreading our Master’s teachings and writings amongst the residents of Newlands West.  Since 1999, we have been holding weekly Satsangs, on Tuesdays from 6:30pm at the Shree Kamatcheeaman Temple.  Coincidentally, the year 1999, was also auspicious for the Temple Society which celebrated its 110th year of existence then”.

He also alluded to the magnitude of Sri Gurudev’s and Pujya Swamiji’s contributions and their impact on the lives of all, both young and old. His strong and inspiring motivation to all to attend Satsangs, Yoga Camps and Yoga Retreats was sincere, convincing and deeply inspirational. He said, “As a youth member of the Society, I would like to encourage all children, youth and adults to attend our monthly Yoga Camps, at our beautiful Sivananda International Cultural Centre in La Mercy.  The Yoga Camp is a spiritual feast for all age groups, and includes a morning Sadhana session, Yoga Asanas, scriptural lessons, sport and practical sessions on life skills and health topics.  It is a day of renunciation, mindfulness and connection with like-minded individuals.  The spiritual gain for all participants who make the sacrifice by arriving at 6am for a peaceful start to their morning, is remarkable.   Sumptuous breakfast and lunch are provided.  Our Pujya Swamiji has advised us that the value of attending one Yoga Camp, is equivalent to attending 12 Sivananda Day Satsangs.

“Once you commit to weekly Satsangs at branch level, then a monthly Sivananda Day Satsang and Yoga Camp at SICC, your days and months will be filled with spiritual activity, peace and prosperity.  Participation in these elevating activities is sure to strengthen and guide you to face the year ahead. Having been exposed to these life-changing activities since birth, I can attest to the insight and strength they have given me to better cope with the challenges that face youth today; challenges such as peer pressure, lack of confidence, coping skills, etc.”.

Sri Logasen Moodley performed a Bharatanatyam Dance. He is a national and international performing artist, specialising in various forms of dance, namely modern, South Indian village and contemporary dance. Logasen, is the artistic director of LMDC Logasen Moodley Dance Company.  His offering to the Divine Mother, was awe-inspiring, professional and deeply spiritual, indicative of his Bhav and love for the fine arts.

We express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to our Newlands West Branch devotees for their outstanding work in organising the Centenary Celebrations in Newlands and helping to sustain Sri Gurudev’s and Pujya Swamiji’s legacies. Their dedication, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence have truly stood out, and it is abundantly clear that they put their hearts into every aspect of this celebration. Their consistency, Guru Bhakti, personal sacrifices and hard work are worthy of emulation.

The Society’s Centenary Celebrations, celebrating Sri Swami Sivananda’s 100th Sannyas Anniversary in 2024, the Society’s 75th Anniversary in 2024 and Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s 100th Birth Anniversary in 2025, are indeed a beautiful expression of appreciation for the opportunity to connect with higher energies, the community, and our own inner selves. It is an acknowledgment of the sacrifices and contributions of our Divine Master and Pujya Swamiji. The sacred nature of the event and the transformative experiences that arise from participating in such gatherings, lends credence to the aspiration to lead a Divine Life.

May our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda bless us all.

The Day of Descent of Divine Grace was observed on Saturday, 1 March 2025 at Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills. Ganga Arati commenced at 4pm followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, Pujya Swamiji’s audio message and a reading on the significance of the occasion.

About this auspicious day, Pujya Swamiji wrote: “I myself had the Grace of our Divine Master when an unusual power of his descended in me. It happened on 1st March this year (2007). When the power descended there was a little disturbance in the beginning but within a few days it settled down. Now there is no change in the descent of the power. I could not believe that the Master would grant me such Divine Grace, a Grace that I do not deserve. If devotees saw my attitude some five years ago and my attitude now, they would be quite surprised that such a tremendous change could take place”.

The following is the transcript of the reading from “Conversations with Gurudev” from Guidance in Daily Life, compiled by Pujya Swamiji and published in 1998. It depicts the profound conversation between Sri Gurudev and his ideal Disciple, Pujya Swami Sahajananda:

Swamiji: Gurudev, when we ask for material things you fulfil our wishes quickly, even without thinking, like Lord Siva. But when we ask for spiritual transformation, you are very hard on us, Gurudev. Again, like Lord Siva sitting with His closed eyes on the Himalayas, you seem to ignore us.

Gurudev: This is because spiritual treasures are valuable and more lasting. They are not like things that perish.

Swamiji: Gurudev, you remarked to one of our devotees who came to you from South Africa, ‘I know when to give and what to give’. Your Divine Grace works in mysterious ways, Gurudev. It is unpredictable, especially when it comes to spiritual transformation.

Gurudev: Yes, the mystery of Divine Grace can only be understood through Divine Grace.

Swamiji: Gurudev, parts of my nature resisted transformation for many years. I was in despair and always had a lurking fear that it will never be possible, because I had heard that even some great spiritual personalities did not achieve a complete transformation of their external nature. They did not achieve the integral transformation as described in your books and teachings, that is, a transformation amidst all the distracting and frustrating situations of daily life.

Gurudev: Such a radical transformation is possible only through the Guru’s Grace.

Swamiji: I can well believe it, Gurudev. No amount of vows and resolutions helped me to overcome some of my cardinal defects. When I gave up every effort and felt helpless, your Divine Grace manifested. Gurudev, I woke up one morning with the distinct feeling that I was a changed being, that some great power of yours had descended upon me and was effecting the transformation. Gurudev, when I realised what was happening, tears of gratitude began pouring for several weeks, as I felt I was not worthy to receive such Grace. I marveled to note with what precision and perfection your power was working. The higher knowledge seemed to be descending in me.

From time to time, you were giving me a formula to repeat, together with my Mantra, so that what you were giving could be stabilised. Gurudev, the distracting external conditions did not change a bit. The attitude of those around me was the same. But the miracle I noticed was that it was I who was changing.

Gurudev, kindly permit me to add something more. Over the years I knew all along that those around me were all your own forms, and that their frustrating actions were meant to help me in my spiritual progress. However, this intellectual acceptance did not help me much, Gurudev. But when your divine power descended upon me, the positive results were at once noticeable.

Gurudev: Yes, that is how Divine Grace works. Its ways are mysterious. It will work according to its own way and not the way you want. Perfect faith and self-surrender will allow it to work unhindered.

Swamiji: Gurudev, I regret to state that as the months went by, I found that sometimes I was losing the marvelous gifts that you were so graciously bestowing upon me, even though I was so unworthy of it. At such times I would feel extremely downcast and think that death would be preferable than to lose what you were giving. Gurudev, I also found that Divine Grace or Guru's Grace is not only difficult to get, but once got, it is even more difficult to maintain.

Gurudev: Yes, such precious spiritual gifts need special care and vigilance to protect them.

Swamiji: Gurudev, thanks to your boundless love and compassion, the transformation became more stabilised after about three years. This you made possible through the formulae that you gave me to repeat from time to time. Still, Gurudev, I need your Grace and protection at every step to keep vigilant at all times.

Gurudev: Yes, my Grace shall be ever with you”.

Pujya Swamiji’s audio message focused on the importance of regular attendance at Satsangs and the importance of practice rather that theoretical knowledge. Pujya Swamiji said that Sri Gurudev didn’t give Pujya Swamiji any lecturing skills, or he would have been touring the world, lecturing, He said that discrimination is lacking today amongst devotees, and that people work mechanically without thinking. He used the following analogies to exemplify this point: a person placing ripe fruit on the kitchen rack and green tomatoes in the fridge, instead of vice versa, and the example of the devotee who made twelve trips to the shop to buy twelve eggs. When the Guru asked the disciple to do many things simultaneously, he brought several people when the Guru needed a doctor. Amongst these people were a doctor and also grave-diggers in case the Guru died. We often blame others except ourselves. We must have dispassion in all that we do, and we must make the effort to change ourselves, and not others.

The Day of Descent of Divine Grace is an apt example of Pujya Swamiji’s unconditional loyalty to Sri Gurudev, his yearning for spiritual growth, deep Sadhana and finally, illumination. It is important that earnest seekers cherish these traits, and learn from Pujya Swamiji’s Guru Bhakti, discipline and dedicated service, for our own spiritual growth and self-transformation.

On this most auspicious day we thank Pujya Swamiji for his supreme sacrifice and dedication. Every cell of Pujya Swamiji’s sacred body, every drop of his pure blood was consecrated towards moulding us and preparing us for God-realisation, either in this birth or in the births to come. We express our eternal gratitude to Pujya Swamiji.

The auspicious Mahasivaratri was celebrated at all Sivanandashrams on Wednesday, 26 February 2025. At Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills, Ganga Arati commenced at 5.30pm, followed by the Mahasivaratri Satsang which concluded the next morning at 5am. The multi-faceted programme, which catered for all, comprised readings, Kirtans, Bhajans, musical items, guest artistes, videos, offerings at the shrine and chanting of the sacred Om Namah Sivaya Mantra while circumambulating the Ganga Rani pool. The four Praharas were intensely spiritual and nurtured the spiritual aspirations of devotees, many of whom stayed until the closure.

Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message on the Power of Namasivaya (Parts 1 and 2) featured in both the First and Fourth Praharas. These recordings by Pujya Swamiji, in which he related the account of an American devotee, Sharon Brown, whose amazing experience exemplified the power of the most sacred Om Namah Sivaya Mantra. Sharon had aplastic anaemia (a disease that attacks the bone marrow). In desperation, she sought Divine help and was advised by a devotee of Swami Muktananda of New York to chant the Om Namah Sivaya Mantra. The mere mention of the Mantra instilled miraculous, curative waves in her. On simply hearing the Mantra even once, Sharon experienced extraordinary exhilaration. The Mantra and the world appeared as one, and the fear of death faded by the power of its repetition. At one point, she felt that cancer came to her as a blessing so as to bring her into contact with the Mantra. She said that through the chanting of the Om Namah Sivaya Mantra, poison can be turned into nectar. Sharon experienced innate peace, bliss and courage during the illness as well as during the operation that was performed on her. To her, the Mantra was a “living form of God” and the “supreme truth”. The audio recording was an excellent example of the power and potency of the sacred Om Namah Sivaya Mantra.

The First Prahara also comprised a track of the video, Wisdom of Sivananda on the power of prayer which portrayed Sri Swami Sivananda’s deep love and reverence for Lord Siva. Guest artiste Kashmira Bhajan, is a student of the Kala Darshan, Institute of Classical Indian Dance and Music, under tutelage of Guru Sri Manesh Maharaj. Her offering, a Kathak Dance to the cosmic dancer, Lord Nataraj, was both inspirational and deeply spiritual. Dhivya Chetty, a young emerging artist, passionately explores various musical forms, including vocals, tabla, keyboards, and violin. She was accompanied by her father who has performed alongside many local and international musicians.

The reading from Glory of Sivaratri from Lord Siva and His Worship by Sri Swami Sivananda, captured the essence of Mahasivaratri. Sri Gurudev said, ‘Sivaratri’ means ‘night of Lord Siva’. The important features of this religious function are rigid fasting for twenty-four hours and vigil throughout the night. Every true devotee of Lord Siva spends the night of Sivaratri in deep meditation, keeps vigil and observes fast. The worship of Lord Siva consists in offering flowers, Bilva leaves and other gifts on the Linga which is a symbol of Lord Siva, and bathing it with milk, honey, butter, ghee, rose- water, etc.

“When creation had been completed, Siva and Parvati had been living on the top of Kailas. Parvati asked; “O venerable Lord, which of the many rituals observed in ‘Thy honour doth please Thee most?’ Lord Siva replied: ‘The thirteenth night of the new moon, Krishna Paksha, in the month of Phalguna (February-March) is known as Sivaratri, and is My most favourable Tithi. My devotee gives Me greater happiness by mere fasting than by ceremonial baths, and offerings of flowers, sweets, incense, etc’.”

The First Prahara concluded with the recital of the Ganesha Arati – Jay Ganesha Deva, chanting of the Om Namah Sivaya Mantra and offerings.

The Second Prahara was resplendent with an array of soul-elevating items. Extracts from Sivananda’s Gospel of Divine Life, highlighted the Master’s deep love for Lord Siva, as is indicative in the following excerpt, entitled The Master’s Worship, “It was the Viswanath Mandir Pratishtha Anniversary Day. A programme of worship was being conducted in the temple. Several aspirants and Sadhus were sitting inside the temple, worshipping the Lord with flowers and bael leaves. The Shiva Lingam was fully covered with a thick shawl of flowers. The Master was circumambulating the temple. As he appeared at the threshold of the shrine, one of the aspirants offered him some flowers and bael leaves with which to worship the Lord. As the Sannyasin outside was going on with his recitation of the Mantras, the Master also joined the devotees in offering flowers to the Lord. This went on for some minutes. In a mood of complete self-forgetfulness, the Master now turned to the Sadhus and aspirants sitting around the Lingam and began worshipping them with the flowers intended for the Lord. There seemed to be not a trace in his eyes or face indicating his recognition of who exactly the individuals were. The eyes seemed to gaze on, but only he could say what he saw”.

The story of Kancha Prabhu, portrays the mundaneness and mysteriousness of attachment and human nature. Instances of this description can be found even today. Those who are ever watchful can see clearly the folly of clinging to mundane things. The story reveals that one cannot take even a single material possession from this world when life departs.

Srimathi Siddharthiya Pillay, a classically-trained Bharathanatyam dancer, presented a dance based on a Malayalam song praising Lord Siva, wherein she depicted the worship of Lord Siva by a gathering of women in the wilderness of the forest and the Lord's manifestation to his devotees.  Sri Thiru Solly Pillay, founder of Agni-swaram, a group of highly talented musicians, accompanied by the well-known Tansen Nepaul, performed with passion, devotion and intense Bhakti. The songs by Sri Gurudev, a video entitled, Lord Shiva visits Baby Krishna, and singing of melodious Thevarams also featured in this Prahara The readings of Nayanar Saints and the Story of Kannappa Nayanar, An Ode to Arunachala and singing of Arunachala Verses, complemented the Second Prahara as well. The An Ode to Arunachala, the Akshara Mana Malai is an inspired poetical composition by Sri Ramana Maharishi. It is an exceptional outpouring of devotion for the Lord of Arunachala in which the Maharishi assumes the role of a lover (seeker) seeking her beloved (the Supreme Being). It is said that anyone who recites the work with devotion will merge with Lord Arunachaleshwara and attain salvation, the goal of human existence. Melodious Kirtans and Bhajans added to the divine and spiritual ambience of the Second Prahara, which concluded with the Siva Arati, chanting and offerings.

In the Third Prahara, the Lilas of Lord Shiva were aptly portrayed in the inspiring story,
Old Drum, New Palace, an audio recording by devotees of the Society. Jay Udith and troupe of Jai Ho Satsang made their love offerings through melodious Kirtans and Bhajans. A video, Lord Rama sings on Sivaratri, Pujya Swamiji’s audio Kirtans and Bhajans, a video on the Om Namah Shiva Series, and a reading of the story, Chipak Mahadev complemented the Third Prahara. The story Chipak Mahadev, brought to the fore, Lord Siva’s miraculous and mysterious powers bestowed upon ardent devotees. The Prahara concluded with the Sivananda Arati, chanting and offerings.

The Fourth and final Prahara comprised Pujya Swamiji’s audio message (Part 2), recounting the American devotee, Sharon Brown’s experiences and the power of the Om Namah Sivaya Mantra, a video on the Vishnu Puran, recital of the Sri Hanuman Chalisa, Ram Bhajan, and an open-time when devotees were given the opportunity to sing Kirtans and Bhajans. The Fourth Prahara brought the Mahasivaratri celebrations to a great spiritual end with the final chanting, offerings and Arati at 5am.

The Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda, extols the virtues and powers of Lord Siva, in the following advice to aspirants:

“Blessed Aspirants,

Lord Siva is the God of Love. His Grace is boundless. He is the Saviour and Guru. He is the Beloved of Uma. He is Satyam, Sivam, Subham, Sundaram, Kantam. He is the Supreme Light that shines in your heart.

Meditate on His Form. Hear His Lilas. Repeat His Mantra ‘Om Namah Sivaya’. Study Siva Purana. Do His worship daily. Behold Him in all names and forms. He will bless you with His Vision”.

As we celebrate another Mahasivaratri, let us reflect, introspect and dive deep into the spiritual realms of our own beings. The importance of the worship of Lord Siva and the popularity and auspiciousness of Mahasivaratri throughout the world cannot be over emphasised. Its glory is ineffable.

May the blessings of Lord Siva, Gurudev, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda be upon us all
