Om Namo Bhagavade Sivanandaya

Established in 1949 by Sri Swami Sivananda

Sri Hanuman Jayanti was celebrated at all Sivanandashrams. At Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills, the 108 recitals of the Sri Hanuman Chalisa commenced at 5am and concluded around 12.30pm. This day also marked the culmination of the 41-day recital of the Sri Hanuman Chalisa, a Vrat in which about 300 devotees participated. Havan was at 3pm, followed by Ganga Arati and Satsang at 4pm. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans and Bhajans, a message from Sri Swami Sivananda on the glory of Sri Hanuman, recital of the Sri Hanuman Ashtak and Sri Hanuman Arati.

The Master aptly explained Sri Hanuman’s birth and extolled His virtues, prowess and love for Lord Rama in the message that was read. He said, “Sri Hanuman was born of Anjani from Pavana, the wind God. He was named Hanuman after the name of the city of Hanumpur over which his maternal uncle, Parti Surya ruled. Hanuman's body was hard as a stone. So Anjani named him Vajranga. He is also known by the names "Mahabir" or mightiest hero, (because he exhibited several heroic feats), Balibima and Maruti.

“The world has not yet seen and will not see in future also a mighty hero like Sri Hanuman. During his life he worked wonders and exhibited superhuman feats of strength and valour. He has left behind Him a name which, as long as the world lasts, will continue to wield a great influence over the minds of millions of people”.

Referring to Sri Hanuman’s wisdom and strength, the Master said, “He is one of the seven Chiranjeevis. He was the only learned scholar who knew the nine Vyakaranas. He learnt the Shastras from the sun-God. He was the wisest of the wise, strongest of the strong and bravest of the brave. He was the Shakti of Rudra. He who meditates on Him and repeats His name, attains power, strength, glory, prosperity and success in life. He is worshipped in all parts of India, particularly in Maharashtra.

“He was born at the most auspicious hour of 4am on the most blessed day, Tuesday, of the 8th of the Lunar month, Chait. He had the power to assume any form he liked; to swell his body to an enormous extent and to reduce it to the length of a thumb. His strength was superhuman. He was the terror of Rakshasas. He was well versed in the four Vedas and other sacred books. His valour, wisdom, knowledge of the scriptures and superhuman strength attracted everybody who came near him. He had extraordinary skill in warfare”.

Sri Hanuman’s unconditional loyalty to Lord Rama is matchless, as is explained by Sri Gurudev, “He was the chosen messenger, warrior and servant of Sri Rama. He was the votary and devotee of Lord Rama. Lord Rama was his all in all. He lived to serve Lord Rama. He lived in Lord Rama. He lived for Lord Rama. He was a minister and intimate friend of Sugriva.

“From his very birth he exhibited extraordinary physical strength and worked many miracles. When he was a child, he put the sun into his mouth. All the Gods were very much troubled. They came with folded hands to the Child and humbly entreated Him to release the sun. The Child set free the sun at their request. Hanuman saw Sri Rama for the first time in Kishkindha. Sri Rama and Lakshmana came there in the course of their search of Sita whom Ravana had carried away”.

It is interesting to learn that a Rishi pronounced a curse on Hanuman for his wrong action, that he would remain unconscious of his great strength and prowess until He met Sri Rama and served Him with devotion. As soon as Hanuman beheld Sri Rama, He became conscious of His strength and power.

The profound importance of Sri Hanuman as the votary of supreme dedication, loyalty and of a true Bhakta, is evident in, “When Sri Rama ascended to his supreme abode, Sri Hanuman also wished to follow him. But the Lord asked Him to remain in this world as his representative and attend all the assemblies of men where discourses on His deeds were held and heard and help His devotees in cultivating devotion. He is a Chiranjeevi, one who is ever at hand to assist devotees of the Lord. He is everywhere. He who has eyes and devotion beholds him and receives his blessings. Where Hanuman is, there are Sri Rama and Mother Sita, and wherever Sri Rama and Mother Sita are praised and their deeds recited, there Hanuman is. Glory to Hanuman, the blessed devotee of Sri Rama”.

The Sri Hanuman Ashtak, written by Saint Tulsidas, and Sri Hanuman Arati were beautifully recited. The mellifluous singing, harmonious musical accompaniment and spiritual aura that the renditions radiated, were a marvelous tribute to Sri Hanuman. The recital of the eight verses in praise of Sri Hanuman and invoking of His blessings, is ideal for peace, well-being, protection and bliss. Each verse narrates a specific story or aspect of Sri Hanuman’s prowess and devotion. The Sri Hanuman Arati is a way to express devotion and reverence towards Lord Hanuman, who is our protector and guardian. The renditions were an excellent medium to connect with the Divine, more especially on Sri Hanuman Jayanti.

May the blessings of Lord Rama, Sri Hanuman, Sri Gurudev and Pujya Swamiji be upon us all.

The most auspicious Ram Navami was celebrated at all Sivanandashrams of the Society. This report focuses on the celebrations at both Sivananda International Cultural Centre (SICC) and Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills.

Hundreds of devotees, well-wishers and donors gathered at SICC for the celebration which was held jointly with our Sivananda Day Satsang. Ganga Arati commenced at 8.30am followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans and Bhajans glorifying Lord Rama, a reading, Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message and a Ramayan recital.

In the Ram Navami message, Sri Swami Sivananda, referring to the magnanimous personality of Lord Rama, said, “Deep and unfathomable like the ocean, firm and steadfast like the Himalayas, valiant like Vishnu, He was the joy of Kaushalya. Though fierce like fire on the battlefield, He was calm like the cool breeze of the Mandara Hills, patient like Mother Earth, bounteous like Kubera the God of Wealth, and righteous like Dharma, the Lord of Justice Himself. In pain or grief of His people, His heart swiftly sympathised with the sufferer. In the festive scenes which held them in joy, He, like a father shared their joy. By His honour and heroism, as well as by His gentleness and love for his subjects, He endeared himself to the heart of His people”.

The Master exhorts us, when he said, “Establish the Rama Rajya in yourself; when each individual thus converts himself into a walking, talking and moving Ram Rajya, then the entire world will be converted into one huge Rama Rajya. The essentials of Rama Rajya have been wonderfully laid before you in the Ramayana. Truth, purity, an indomitable will to conquer evil, an unshakable faith in and adherence to Dharma, obedience, forbearance, sympathy and love, these constitute Lord Rama. With the birth of these in you, be sure that Lord Rama has enthroned Himself in your heart. Ramayana is replete with lessons which every aspirant should learn and assimilate”.

The Master’s advice to women is that they should emulate the example of Mother Sita. He said, “Every woman should get before herself the ideal of Sita to perfection. Pativrata Dharma is the only Dharma for a woman. She need not perform austerities or observe other Vratas. She need not practise Yoga or engage herself in worship of the Lord. If a woman sticks to this one Pativrata Dharma, she gets Mukti easily. Her might then becomes unchallengeable. Even gods will bow to her, and the elements will obey her commands. O fashionable woman, O immodest lady, turn away from the path which leads to ruin; follow Sita's example. You will be ever remembered, even as Sita is”.

Pujya Swamiji’s audio message, in response to questions to Pujya Swamiji, focused on the double consciousness of saints and Avatars. He said, “Deep inside they know who they are, but they play on the human stage also….”. He explained that when God comes to this earth, then He is subject to His own laws and acts like a human being, to illustrate to humans the difference between Dharma and Adharma. Lord Rama asked for help of others “but He was all powerful inwardly”. Pujya Swamiji mentioned that even Sri Gurudev said that he worries about certain things, but in essence he is peace and bliss. Pujya Swamiji continued, “We are searching for happiness, unbroken happiness, because you know there is something deep inside, otherwise you won’t be searching for it”. Saints and Avatars have Maya under their control and know everything that is going on. Sri Gurudev would have a quick glance and tell one about oneself. “For all these questions, meditation is the best answer”, said Pujya Swamiji.

The Phoenix Branches of the Society did a beautiful and mellifluous recital of the Ramayana. Vibrant, soulful and inspiring, the Bhakti in the offering was evident. Complemented by the inspiring Kirtans and Bhajans in praise of Lord Rama, the programme was spiritually elevating.

The evening’s Ram Navami celebration at Sivanandashram commenced with Ganga Arati at 5.30pm and was followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, a message from Sri Swami Sivananda and a recital from the Ramayana.

In the message, Glory of the Ramayana by Sri Swami Sivananda, Valmiki once asked Sage Narada, “O Venerable Rishi, please tell me whether there is a perfect man in this world, who is at once virtuous, brave, dutiful, truthful, noble, steadfast in duty and kind to all beings”.  Rishi Narada replied, “There is such a one, a prince of Ikshvaku's line, named Sri Rama. He is virtuous, brave, gentle and wise. He is a great hero. He loves his subjects immensely. He is a protector of Dharma. He is firm and steadfast. He is just and liberal. He is well versed in the Vedas and in the science of arms. He is unique in the possession of virtues and matchless in beauty. He is an obedient son, a kind brother, loving husband, a faithful friend, an ideal king, a merciful enemy, and a lover of all living beings. All people adore Him’”.

In respect of the origin of the Ramayana, Sri Swami Sivananda said, “…Brahma vanished after inspiring the poet with the knowledge of Sri Rama's whole story. Valmiki sat down in meditation and saw every event in Sri Rama's story in detail in his Yogic vision. Then he began to write the Ramayana. The melody of the Ramayana was born from a heart of love and pity for the wounded bird. The Ramayana is a marvellous book which contains the essence of all Vedas and all sacred scriptures. It is a treasure for man. It is a reservoir which contains the nectar of immortality. It delineates the character of a son who renounces the throne, the pleasures of the senses and the world in order to fulfil the words of His father, and lives in the forest for a period of fourteen years. The Ramayana depicts the character of a father who sends even his most beloved son into exile in order to keep up his word. It delineates the character of an ideal, chaste wife, who is devoted to Her husband till the end of Her life, who shares the adversities of Her husband and serves Him untiringly in the forest, and who also regards Her husband as God himself”.

The deeply inspiring Ramayana recital and melodious Kirtans and Bhajans were a fitting offering to Lord Rama during the evening’s Satsang as well.

The take-home message for us all from this Ram Navami is aptly captured by the Master, “Every year Sri Ram Navami celebrations are a boon and a blessing to all. They serve to keep bright and alive the lofty examples, by following which, life on earth becomes fruitful. Attend the celebrations with the right and proper feeling and benefit fully. Resolve from this Rama Navami Day to take a daily dip in the life-redeeming waters of the Ramayana. Read a small portion of the holy scripture every day. You will be constantly inspired. You will derive valuable guidance in your day-to-day life. You will, without fail imbibe in your own being the lofty qualities embodied therein. Within a short time, you will surely find yourself a different person, filled with the divine spirit of truth and purity. Peace, joy and prosperity will then be yours, here and hereafter. May the Grace and blessings of Lord Rama be upon all for their peace, prosperity, good health and spiritual illumination!”

The most recent Centenary Celebrations’ function was held at the Pretoria Chinese School in Wingate, Pretoria East, on Saturday, 29 March 2025. Ganga Arati commenced at 2.50pm followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, a children’s item, a play, an address by the Deputy Consul General of India in Johannesburg and a message from the Society. The Centenary Celebrations this year focused on Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s 100th birth anniversary, and Pujya Swamiji as an ideal disciple of Sri Swami Sivananda. Pujya Swami Sahajananda, Spiritual Head of Divine Life Society of South Africa, led the Society with distinction for 58 years, and took Mahasamadhi on 10 December 2007. In obedience to our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda, and in the spirit of selfless service to the country, Pujya Swamiji initiated humanitarian projects to alleviate poverty, illiteracy and suffering in this country. Completed projects total approximately 700 to date. South Africa will not be able to repay this spiritual giant for these inestimable contributions which enriched the country greatly. This celebration, and all the other Satsangs and programmes this year, are a miniscule attempt at glorifying the contributions of this illustrious son of South Africa, so that his legacy continues to nourish us all.

The message from the Society captured some of Pujya Swamiji’s multifarious contributions. This is evident in, “Pujya Swamiji dedicated his entire life to promote the work and teachings of Sri Swami Sivananda. He set up Ashrams for our spiritual sustenance, printed and distributed the Master’s books far and wide, and initiated humanitarian projects to give devotees the opportunity to worship God by serving fellow man. His visionary leadership in establishing the Sivananda Sunlit Path Schools’ Programme to assist learners cope with drug addiction and social ills, the Sivananda Ghat, poor feeding programmes for thousands of school children daily, grocery hamper distributions to the needy, our clinics and numerous educational, social and humanitarian initiatives, Monthly Yoga Camps, conduct of monthly Sivananda Day Satsangs, establishment of our beautiful Ashrams, and the administration of our five free sewing schools (wherein over 11 000 learners have graduated thus far), are the various love offerings that were made by this gentle saint at the feet of our Divine Master”.

Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message focused on the power of positive relationships as a way to reach God. In a relationship between husband and wife, each should assist the other to aspire for God. If this is not understood by any one of the spouses, the result is disharmony and a “tug-o-war” for domination. Pujya Swamiji said that we should use the person next to us to go towards God. He quoted the case of Edgar Casey, author of the book, Many Mansions. The author could look into the lives of others, and soon came to realise that the Law of Karma and Reincarnation have a strong bearing on our lives. Hence, we should bear with each other and “settle our debts, and not make fresh Karma”. God doesn’t punish anyone. It is the Law of Karma that has a bearing on our lives. Pujya Swamiji said that we should use misfortunes and calamities to go towards God. We should be in tune with God, by repeating the Divine Name and calling for God. If we call for God and Gurudev in the small things, wonderful things will happen. If we call sincerely, God will give us the strength to overcome difficulties.

The inspiring and confident presentation of the item, “Sri Gurudev Says”, by our Spiritual Darlings (children), left an indelible impression on listeners. Our Spiritual Darlings reminded us, young and old, of these timeless and profound thoughts. Herewith a few excerpts: “God is my real father, mother, friend and guide; Swami Sivananda was a saint who saw God and taught others also how to see Him; When God is near, why should I fear? God is ever with me and lives in my heart; A good action will bring me happiness and joy, a bad action will bring me pain”. These profound sayings were composed by Pujya Swamiji Sahajananda and reinforces the teachings contained in the Vedas

The play, Back to Basics which served as a reminder of Ashram decorum and rules, emphasising also the core teachings of the Master, was brilliantly enacted by young adults and senior devotees. The play focused on the importance of the Ram Bhajans in our Satsangs, rules governing discipline, silence, posture and etiquette during Satsangs and Ganga Arati, and how to overcome depression through constant and regular prayer and surrender to the Divine. The play concluded with a gentle reminder to all devotees to conduct themselves as if our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda are looking at us; because they are indeed always present. Referring to the watchful eye of our Divine Master, Pujya Swamiji said, ‘Even now he is controlling and looking after everything’”.

The beautifully executed dances by Shivohum Fine Arts captivated the attention of many, and added colour and divinity to the function. It goes without saying that the melodious Bhajans and Kirtans added divine lustre to the programme. All in all, a spiritual feast!

The Deputy Consul General of India in Johannesburg, the Honourable Sri Harish Kumar, in his address paid tribute to Sri Swami Sivananda’s “vision of spirituality”. He also quoted the Master when he (Sri Swami Sivananda) said, “Satsang is the greatest purifier”. He applauded Pujya Swamiji’s multifarious spiritual and humanitarian initiatives, which are a testament to Pujya Swamiji’s legacy. He said that during a visit to the Master’s Ashram in Rishikesh during his youth, he was given one of the Master’s books which had a profound impact on his life. He found resonance in the Master’s dictum that “human life must be a Divine Life”. Referring to Pujya Swamiji’s service activities, he said that these self-help and humanitarian projects are an excellent example of Vasudeva Kutumbakam, meaning that the world is one family, emphasising the concept of unity, harmony and interconnectedness among all living beings. Pujya Swamiji’s contributions have had a significant impact on the world around us.

We express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to our Pretoria Satsang Organising Committee and devotees for their outstanding efforts, high standards, and meticulous organisation in bringing the message of Divine Life and the teachings of Sri Swami Sivananda and the legacies of Pujya Swami Sahajananda to donors, devotees and well-wishers of Pretoria. In so doing, they have helped in sustaining Sri Gurudev’s and Pujya Swamiji’s legacies. Their dedication, attention to detail and commitment to excellence have truly stood out. Their hard work and dedication are highly inspiring and commendable. It is abundantly clear that they expressed their sincere Guru Bhakti, and gave their entire energies, abilities, commitment and hearts to every aspect of this celebration.

May our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda bless us all.

The Day of Descent of Divine Grace was observed on Saturday, 1 March 2025 at Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills. Ganga Arati commenced at 4pm followed by Satsang. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, Pujya Swamiji’s audio message and a reading on the significance of the occasion.

About this auspicious day, Pujya Swamiji wrote: “I myself had the Grace of our Divine Master when an unusual power of his descended in me. It happened on 1st March this year (2007). When the power descended there was a little disturbance in the beginning but within a few days it settled down. Now there is no change in the descent of the power. I could not believe that the Master would grant me such Divine Grace, a Grace that I do not deserve. If devotees saw my attitude some five years ago and my attitude now, they would be quite surprised that such a tremendous change could take place”.

The following is the transcript of the reading from “Conversations with Gurudev” from Guidance in Daily Life, compiled by Pujya Swamiji and published in 1998. It depicts the profound conversation between Sri Gurudev and his ideal Disciple, Pujya Swami Sahajananda:

Swamiji: Gurudev, when we ask for material things you fulfil our wishes quickly, even without thinking, like Lord Siva. But when we ask for spiritual transformation, you are very hard on us, Gurudev. Again, like Lord Siva sitting with His closed eyes on the Himalayas, you seem to ignore us.

Gurudev: This is because spiritual treasures are valuable and more lasting. They are not like things that perish.

Swamiji: Gurudev, you remarked to one of our devotees who came to you from South Africa, ‘I know when to give and what to give’. Your Divine Grace works in mysterious ways, Gurudev. It is unpredictable, especially when it comes to spiritual transformation.

Gurudev: Yes, the mystery of Divine Grace can only be understood through Divine Grace.

Swamiji: Gurudev, parts of my nature resisted transformation for many years. I was in despair and always had a lurking fear that it will never be possible, because I had heard that even some great spiritual personalities did not achieve a complete transformation of their external nature. They did not achieve the integral transformation as described in your books and teachings, that is, a transformation amidst all the distracting and frustrating situations of daily life.

Gurudev: Such a radical transformation is possible only through the Guru’s Grace.

Swamiji: I can well believe it, Gurudev. No amount of vows and resolutions helped me to overcome some of my cardinal defects. When I gave up every effort and felt helpless, your Divine Grace manifested. Gurudev, I woke up one morning with the distinct feeling that I was a changed being, that some great power of yours had descended upon me and was effecting the transformation. Gurudev, when I realised what was happening, tears of gratitude began pouring for several weeks, as I felt I was not worthy to receive such Grace. I marveled to note with what precision and perfection your power was working. The higher knowledge seemed to be descending in me.

From time to time, you were giving me a formula to repeat, together with my Mantra, so that what you were giving could be stabilised. Gurudev, the distracting external conditions did not change a bit. The attitude of those around me was the same. But the miracle I noticed was that it was I who was changing.

Gurudev, kindly permit me to add something more. Over the years I knew all along that those around me were all your own forms, and that their frustrating actions were meant to help me in my spiritual progress. However, this intellectual acceptance did not help me much, Gurudev. But when your divine power descended upon me, the positive results were at once noticeable.

Gurudev: Yes, that is how Divine Grace works. Its ways are mysterious. It will work according to its own way and not the way you want. Perfect faith and self-surrender will allow it to work unhindered.

Swamiji: Gurudev, I regret to state that as the months went by, I found that sometimes I was losing the marvelous gifts that you were so graciously bestowing upon me, even though I was so unworthy of it. At such times I would feel extremely downcast and think that death would be preferable than to lose what you were giving. Gurudev, I also found that Divine Grace or Guru's Grace is not only difficult to get, but once got, it is even more difficult to maintain.

Gurudev: Yes, such precious spiritual gifts need special care and vigilance to protect them.

Swamiji: Gurudev, thanks to your boundless love and compassion, the transformation became more stabilised after about three years. This you made possible through the formulae that you gave me to repeat from time to time. Still, Gurudev, I need your Grace and protection at every step to keep vigilant at all times.

Gurudev: Yes, my Grace shall be ever with you”.

Pujya Swamiji’s audio message focused on the importance of regular attendance at Satsangs and the importance of practice rather that theoretical knowledge. Pujya Swamiji said that Sri Gurudev didn’t give Pujya Swamiji any lecturing skills, or he would have been touring the world, lecturing, He said that discrimination is lacking today amongst devotees, and that people work mechanically without thinking. He used the following analogies to exemplify this point: a person placing ripe fruit on the kitchen rack and green tomatoes in the fridge, instead of vice versa, and the example of the devotee who made twelve trips to the shop to buy twelve eggs. When the Guru asked the disciple to do many things simultaneously, he brought several people when the Guru needed a doctor. Amongst these people were a doctor and also grave-diggers in case the Guru died. We often blame others except ourselves. We must have dispassion in all that we do, and we must make the effort to change ourselves, and not others.

The Day of Descent of Divine Grace is an apt example of Pujya Swamiji’s unconditional loyalty to Sri Gurudev, his yearning for spiritual growth, deep Sadhana and finally, illumination. It is important that earnest seekers cherish these traits, and learn from Pujya Swamiji’s Guru Bhakti, discipline and dedicated service, for our own spiritual growth and self-transformation.

On this most auspicious day we thank Pujya Swamiji for his supreme sacrifice and dedication. Every cell of Pujya Swamiji’s sacred body, every drop of his pure blood was consecrated towards moulding us and preparing us for God-realisation, either in this birth or in the births to come. We express our eternal gratitude to Pujya Swamiji.

The auspicious Mahasivaratri was celebrated at all Sivanandashrams on Wednesday, 26 February 2025. At Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills, Ganga Arati commenced at 5.30pm, followed by the Mahasivaratri Satsang which concluded the next morning at 5am. The multi-faceted programme, which catered for all, comprised readings, Kirtans, Bhajans, musical items, guest artistes, videos, offerings at the shrine and chanting of the sacred Om Namah Sivaya Mantra while circumambulating the Ganga Rani pool. The four Praharas were intensely spiritual and nurtured the spiritual aspirations of devotees, many of whom stayed until the closure.

Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message on the Power of Namasivaya (Parts 1 and 2) featured in both the First and Fourth Praharas. These recordings by Pujya Swamiji, in which he related the account of an American devotee, Sharon Brown, whose amazing experience exemplified the power of the most sacred Om Namah Sivaya Mantra. Sharon had aplastic anaemia (a disease that attacks the bone marrow). In desperation, she sought Divine help and was advised by a devotee of Swami Muktananda of New York to chant the Om Namah Sivaya Mantra. The mere mention of the Mantra instilled miraculous, curative waves in her. On simply hearing the Mantra even once, Sharon experienced extraordinary exhilaration. The Mantra and the world appeared as one, and the fear of death faded by the power of its repetition. At one point, she felt that cancer came to her as a blessing so as to bring her into contact with the Mantra. She said that through the chanting of the Om Namah Sivaya Mantra, poison can be turned into nectar. Sharon experienced innate peace, bliss and courage during the illness as well as during the operation that was performed on her. To her, the Mantra was a “living form of God” and the “supreme truth”. The audio recording was an excellent example of the power and potency of the sacred Om Namah Sivaya Mantra.

The First Prahara also comprised a track of the video, Wisdom of Sivananda on the power of prayer which portrayed Sri Swami Sivananda’s deep love and reverence for Lord Siva. Guest artiste Kashmira Bhajan, is a student of the Kala Darshan, Institute of Classical Indian Dance and Music, under tutelage of Guru Sri Manesh Maharaj. Her offering, a Kathak Dance to the cosmic dancer, Lord Nataraj, was both inspirational and deeply spiritual. Dhivya Chetty, a young emerging artist, passionately explores various musical forms, including vocals, tabla, keyboards, and violin. She was accompanied by her father who has performed alongside many local and international musicians.

The reading from Glory of Sivaratri from Lord Siva and His Worship by Sri Swami Sivananda, captured the essence of Mahasivaratri. Sri Gurudev said, ‘Sivaratri’ means ‘night of Lord Siva’. The important features of this religious function are rigid fasting for twenty-four hours and vigil throughout the night. Every true devotee of Lord Siva spends the night of Sivaratri in deep meditation, keeps vigil and observes fast. The worship of Lord Siva consists in offering flowers, Bilva leaves and other gifts on the Linga which is a symbol of Lord Siva, and bathing it with milk, honey, butter, ghee, rose- water, etc.

“When creation had been completed, Siva and Parvati had been living on the top of Kailas. Parvati asked; “O venerable Lord, which of the many rituals observed in ‘Thy honour doth please Thee most?’ Lord Siva replied: ‘The thirteenth night of the new moon, Krishna Paksha, in the month of Phalguna (February-March) is known as Sivaratri, and is My most favourable Tithi. My devotee gives Me greater happiness by mere fasting than by ceremonial baths, and offerings of flowers, sweets, incense, etc’.”

The First Prahara concluded with the recital of the Ganesha Arati – Jay Ganesha Deva, chanting of the Om Namah Sivaya Mantra and offerings.

The Second Prahara was resplendent with an array of soul-elevating items. Extracts from Sivananda’s Gospel of Divine Life, highlighted the Master’s deep love for Lord Siva, as is indicative in the following excerpt, entitled The Master’s Worship, “It was the Viswanath Mandir Pratishtha Anniversary Day. A programme of worship was being conducted in the temple. Several aspirants and Sadhus were sitting inside the temple, worshipping the Lord with flowers and bael leaves. The Shiva Lingam was fully covered with a thick shawl of flowers. The Master was circumambulating the temple. As he appeared at the threshold of the shrine, one of the aspirants offered him some flowers and bael leaves with which to worship the Lord. As the Sannyasin outside was going on with his recitation of the Mantras, the Master also joined the devotees in offering flowers to the Lord. This went on for some minutes. In a mood of complete self-forgetfulness, the Master now turned to the Sadhus and aspirants sitting around the Lingam and began worshipping them with the flowers intended for the Lord. There seemed to be not a trace in his eyes or face indicating his recognition of who exactly the individuals were. The eyes seemed to gaze on, but only he could say what he saw”.

The story of Kancha Prabhu, portrays the mundaneness and mysteriousness of attachment and human nature. Instances of this description can be found even today. Those who are ever watchful can see clearly the folly of clinging to mundane things. The story reveals that one cannot take even a single material possession from this world when life departs.

Srimathi Siddharthiya Pillay, a classically-trained Bharathanatyam dancer, presented a dance based on a Malayalam song praising Lord Siva, wherein she depicted the worship of Lord Siva by a gathering of women in the wilderness of the forest and the Lord's manifestation to his devotees.  Sri Thiru Solly Pillay, founder of Agni-swaram, a group of highly talented musicians, accompanied by the well-known Tansen Nepaul, performed with passion, devotion and intense Bhakti. The songs by Sri Gurudev, a video entitled, Lord Shiva visits Baby Krishna, and singing of melodious Thevarams also featured in this Prahara The readings of Nayanar Saints and the Story of Kannappa Nayanar, An Ode to Arunachala and singing of Arunachala Verses, complemented the Second Prahara as well. The An Ode to Arunachala, the Akshara Mana Malai is an inspired poetical composition by Sri Ramana Maharishi. It is an exceptional outpouring of devotion for the Lord of Arunachala in which the Maharishi assumes the role of a lover (seeker) seeking her beloved (the Supreme Being). It is said that anyone who recites the work with devotion will merge with Lord Arunachaleshwara and attain salvation, the goal of human existence. Melodious Kirtans and Bhajans added to the divine and spiritual ambience of the Second Prahara, which concluded with the Siva Arati, chanting and offerings.

In the Third Prahara, the Lilas of Lord Shiva were aptly portrayed in the inspiring story,
Old Drum, New Palace, an audio recording by devotees of the Society. Jay Udith and troupe of Jai Ho Satsang made their love offerings through melodious Kirtans and Bhajans. A video, Lord Rama sings on Sivaratri, Pujya Swamiji’s audio Kirtans and Bhajans, a video on the Om Namah Shiva Series, and a reading of the story, Chipak Mahadev complemented the Third Prahara. The story Chipak Mahadev, brought to the fore, Lord Siva’s miraculous and mysterious powers bestowed upon ardent devotees. The Prahara concluded with the Sivananda Arati, chanting and offerings.

The Fourth and final Prahara comprised Pujya Swamiji’s audio message (Part 2), recounting the American devotee, Sharon Brown’s experiences and the power of the Om Namah Sivaya Mantra, a video on the Vishnu Puran, recital of the Sri Hanuman Chalisa, Ram Bhajan, and an open-time when devotees were given the opportunity to sing Kirtans and Bhajans. The Fourth Prahara brought the Mahasivaratri celebrations to a great spiritual end with the final chanting, offerings and Arati at 5am.

The Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda, extols the virtues and powers of Lord Siva, in the following advice to aspirants:

“Blessed Aspirants,

Lord Siva is the God of Love. His Grace is boundless. He is the Saviour and Guru. He is the Beloved of Uma. He is Satyam, Sivam, Subham, Sundaram, Kantam. He is the Supreme Light that shines in your heart.

Meditate on His Form. Hear His Lilas. Repeat His Mantra ‘Om Namah Sivaya’. Study Siva Purana. Do His worship daily. Behold Him in all names and forms. He will bless you with His Vision”.

As we celebrate another Mahasivaratri, let us reflect, introspect and dive deep into the spiritual realms of our own beings. The importance of the worship of Lord Siva and the popularity and auspiciousness of Mahasivaratri throughout the world cannot be over emphasised. Its glory is ineffable.

May the blessings of Lord Siva, Gurudev, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda be upon us all

Divine Life Society of South Africa launched the 41-Day Recital of the Sri Hanuman Chalisa, 11 times daily, on Monday, 3 March 2025. The recital will end on the most auspicious Sri Hanuman Jayanti on 12 April 2025. The final recital will be followed by a Havan.

Both Sri Gurudev and Pujya Swami Sahajananda advocated and recommended the recital of the Sri Hanuman Chalisa for protection, safety, mental and emotional stability, welfare and peace in the world. The glory of Sri Hanuman, His prowess and indomitable presence will last for posterity. Sri Gurudev said, “The world has not yet seen and will not see in future also a mighty hero like Sri Hanuman. During His life He worked wonders and exhibited superhuman feats of strength and valour. He has left behind Him a Name which, as long as the world lasts, will continue wielding a great influence over the minds of millions of people.

“Where Hanuman is, there are Sri Rama and Sri Sita, and wherever Sri Rama and Sri Sita are praised and their deeds recited, there Hanuman is”.

The Sri Hanuman Chalisa Launch Satsang on 3 March 2025 at Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills, commenced with Ganga Arati at 5.30pm. Signed pledges by devotees were offered at the shrine on this day. The Satsang Programme comprised Invocation, a reading of the Rules for the 41-Day Sri Hanuman Chalisa Recital, and the recital of the Sri Hanuman Chalisa 11 times. The rules which appear in the Divine Life Society of South Africa Prayer Book, are enumerated below and are useful to anyone who wishes to do this Vrat.

1. The Sri Hanuman Chalisa should be repeated regularly for 41 days, either in the morning or in the evening.

2. Have a bath and wear clean clothes.

3. Sit in any comfortable posture in front of a picture of Sri Hanuman.

4. Keep some fruit as Prasad in a little tray.

5. Keep 11 flowers in another small tray.

6. First commence repeating some Guru Mantras.

7. After the repetition of the Guru Mantras, commence the Sri Hanuman Chalisa from “Sri Guru Charana Sarojaraja…”

8. Complete the repetition till the end, until “Hridaya Basahu Sura Bhoop Sita Ram”. This is one repetition.

9. On completion of the repetition once, offer one flower to Sri Hanuman.

10. Do the repetition 11 times at each sitting. Each time a repetition is completed, offer one flower. In this way offer all the 11 flowers.

11. After the completion 11 times at one sitting, repeat some Shanti Mantras, prostrate and get up.

12. The fruit can be distributed to all as Prasad.

13. While sitting in the posture, do not change it or look around. Keep the eyes closed and concentrate on the picture of Sri Hanuman, or concentrate on his picture with eyes open.

14. On completion of the Mantra 11 times for 41 days, perform Havan with the help of a qualified pundit, and do some Puja in a Hanuman temple with the guidance of a priest.

15. You can also do poor feeding or some charity on completion of the Yajna.

16. Women undergoing the monthly cleansing process should not repeat the Mantra during this period.

“Hanuman ranks first amongst the heroes of the world. His heroic deeds, wonderful exploits and marvellous feats of strength and bravery cannot be adequately described. His sense of duty was extremely laudable. He had great skill in all military tactics and methods of warfare. His crossing the sea of thirty miles in one leap and lifting the crest of a mountain in the palm of the hand, his carrying of the brothers on his shoulders from the nether world to Lanka are all astounding, superhuman feats which baffle human description”Sri Swami Sivananda

May the blessings of Sri Hanuman envelope our lives, so that we may tread the path of righteousness, love, Bhakti, truth, devotion and perennial love for the Lord.

Divine Life Society of South Africa celebrated the auspicious Maha Kumbha Mela on Sunday, 2 February 2025 at its Sivananda International Cultural Centre, (SICC), La Mercy, as part of its Centenary Celebrations. The Maha Kumbha Mela is currently being observed in Prayagraj, India at the confluence of the sacred Ganga, Yamuna and the subterranean Saraswati rivers. It began on 13 January and ends on 26 February 2025. The Kumbha Mela, which takes place every 12 years on the banks of the holy Ganga River, the most sacred river in India, draws millions of pilgrims. This year marks the Maha or Purna Kumbh which occurs only once every 144 years, and we are truly blessed to see this in our lifetime. The number expected to attend this year is approximately 400 million – the largest gathering of human beings on the planet. Such is the power and glory of Mother Ganga! The origin of the Ganga is ascribed to celestial glory. Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita: “I am the Ganga among rivers”. For devotees, the Maha Kumbha Mela is an opportunity to wash away sins and gain spiritual merit (punya). The alignment of Jupiter, the sun and the moon during the festival is believed to amplify the sacredness and sanctity of the rivers, making them life-giving and soul-cleansing.

At this Maha Kumbha Mela at Sivananda International Cultural Centre, devotees and the public were afforded the opportunity to experience the beauty and grandeur of Mother Ganga, Ganga Arati, the beautiful Ganga Ranis and the expression of faith, so as to promote and uphold our glorious Hindu Dharma. Through the Grace of our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda, and the vision and efforts of Pujya Swami Sahajananda, Mother Ganga now flows in South Africa at the various Centres of Divine Life Society of South Africa. The holy Ganga pools are regularly consecrated with Ganga Jal, brought from Gangotri in India.

The programme on Sunday, 2 February 2025 comprised a morning Sadhana Programme which included a Ganga Havan and guest artistes from 6am to 8am. Ganga Arati and offering of Ganga Jal at the four sacred pools (Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati and Bhagirathi) was from 8am to 9.50am. The Satsang began at 10am and concluded at 12.30pm.

Hundreds of devotees, members of the public, donors and well-wishers from all parts of the country converged at the serene and beautiful Sivananda International Cultural Centre for the morning Sadhana programme in Bhagirathi, which has cascading water features. Many came by buses arranged by local Hindu organisations. After the Invocation, soulful chants of sacred Mantras reverberated during the Ganga Havan, signifying purification, spiritual growth and connection with the divine. The divine energy was palpable and the atmosphere was electric with spiritual fervour.

Guest artiste, Archarya Rathna, Isaiselvamani V. Karthiegasen Pillay and his entourage rendered Kirtans and Bhajans in praise of Mother Ganga. His love-offering at this Maha Kumbha Mela added beauty, divinity and deep spirituality to the event.

Devotees offered Ganga Jal as oblations to the Divine. Colourful stalls with memorabilia, Ganga Jal, a water feature with banners and audio-visual educative material on the Maha Kumbha Mela and Mother Ganga, adorned the forecourt of the Main Prayer Hall, creating a sanctimonious atmosphere.

Sri Swami Sivananda, in the article “The Glory of Ganga” from the book, Mother Ganga, said, “For a Hindu, the word Ganga or Ganges has its own sacred association. Every Hindu thirsts for a dip in the Ganga, and for a drop of Her water at the time of his death. Aspirants and mendicants build their huts on the banks of the Ganga for practising penance and meditation. Bhishma spoke very highly of the glory of the Ganga in his parting instructions to the Pandavas from his bed of arrows. In the Satya Yuga, all places were sacred. In the Treta Yuga, Pushkara was considered the most holy place. In the Dvapara Yuga, Kurukshetra was regarded as the most sacred place. In Kali Yuga, Ganga has that glory. Devi Bhagavatam says: ‘He who utters the Name of Ganga even from hundreds of miles afar is freed from sins and attains the abode of Lord Hari’.

“Ganga is known by various names like Bhagirathi (brought by Bhagiratha), Jahnavi (let out by Jahnu), etc. Sri Sankara, in his praise of Mother Ganga, accounts for Her origin thus: In the beginning, Ganga occupied the vessel (Kamandalu) in which Lord Brahma performed His daily ablution; then She flowed down washing the Feet of Lord Vishnu; and adorning the head of Lord Siva, finally She came down to the earth as the daughter of Jahnu”.

Pujya Swamiji’s message was pregnant with deep spiritual truths and profound advice to devotees. He focused on the importance of the Guru, faith and self-surrender, the Law of Karma, importance of Sadhana, namely Home Satsangs and God’s omnipotence and omnipresence. In highlighting the importance of faith and self-surrender, Pujya Swamiji questioned, “Suppose a calamity happens tomorrow, will we lose our faith? We will not, because we know that the whole universe is permeated by God”. Pujya Swamiji’s assurance in the following words is gratifying, “We in the Divine Life Society, who are disciples of Gurudev should never live in a state of fear or insecurity, because we have God by our side, and we have our Master by our side, and we can turn to him whenever we want”. Pujya Swamiji assured us that Home Satsangs and repetition of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra are sure to protect sincere devotees.

The Guest Speaker, The Honourable Consul General of India in Durban, Dr Thelma John David, alluded to the magnitude of the Kumbha Mela. She said that in the historical context, the Kumbha Mela was celebrated for centuries, connecting millions through shared spirituality. She also highlighted the link between South Africa and India through its rich heritage. She said that for Divine Life Society it is a trifecta of celebrations, as the Society is celebrating Sri Swami Sivananda’s Sannyas Centenary, Pujya Swamiji’s Birth Centenary and the 75th Anniversary of the Society. She commended the Society and Pujya Swamiji’s vision in bringing Mother Ganga to South Africa in the form of Ganga Ranis which are accessible to multitudes.

Kriti Lalla from the Kala Darshan Institute of Classical Music and Dance presented two well executed Kathak dance items in honour of Mother Ganga. Her outstanding performances were graceful, professionally executed and an apt offering to the Divine Mother.

The video on the origin and significance of the Maha Kumbha Mela, aptly captured this mammoth event, and alluded to man’s attempt to attain Moksha through a process of purification by taking a holy dip in the sacred rivers. Vivid visuals and narratives brought to life the atmosphere, ambience, emotions and energy of this event – the largest gathering on the planet.

Of significance is that the Maha Kumbha Mela is not just a religious festival but a symbol of faith, devotion, and cultural heritage. It showcases the spiritual depth of Hinduism and the enduring power of tradition, attracting people from all over the world. On an esoteric level, it has deep spiritual significance for us all, of purification, cleansing – physical, mental and spiritual, a journey of the soul towards enlightenment and spiritual growth. The hundreds who visited Sivananda International Cultural Centre have truly benefited. The nectar of Ganga Rani, the refreshing Bhagirathi, the awe-inspiring Yamuna and Saraswati are sure to have touched the inner fibre of many, who in some small way, have felt the presence of the Divine Mother in her pristine and celestial beauty.

The Swami Sahajananda Community Centre in Forderville, Estcourt was the venue for the launch of Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s Birth Centenary Celebrations on Sunday, 26 February 2025. The event was hosted by the Society’s Estcourt Branch. The day’s programme commenced at 8am with Havan, followed by breakfast. A special “Lamp Lighting Ceremony” commenced at 9.15am, followed by Ganga Arati at 9.30am and Satsang at 10am. The Satsang programme comprised Kirtans, Bhajans, Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s audio message, a message from the Society, cultural items, an address by the Mayor of Umtshezi Municipality, the release of a special brochure and a dance item.

The precincts of the Gayatri Mandir and the Sri Swami Sahajananda Community Centre were enveloped in the soulful Mantra chants of the sacred Havan. Representatives of various local Hindu organisations participated in the Havan, which set the tone and created an appropriate ambience for the auspicious launch of Pujya Swamiji’s Birth Centenary Celebrations in Estcourt, the town of Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s birth. Coincidentally, Pujya Swamiji’s 100th birth anniversary this year coincides with the sacred Sri Guru Purnima on 10 July 2025. Indeed, a celestial alignment of great importance and relevance to devotees.

The lighting of 100 diyas (lamps), with the rendition of the Sivananda Arati, was both symbolic and a memorable moment. The audience witnessed, in rapt attention, a unique happening, which signified the presence of divinity, knowledge, wisdom, purity and perfection – all that Pujya Swamiji embodied and personified.

Pujya Swamiji’s audio message gave succinct instructions for self-transformation. He explained that Sri Gurudev taught that we should see divinity in animate and inanimate objects also. Pujya Swamiji said, “However difficult it is, we should try to see God, not only in the forms that are living and moving, but also in inert forms”. He explained that we should see goodness in all and spread positivity, rather than hatred and negativity. If there is hatred and animosity, then it is indicative of something being wrong in one’s Sadhana. We must change our angle of vision for spiritual growth. When one complained to Sri Gurudev, Sri Aurobindo and Sri Swami Yogananda, they all asked the complainant to introspect and make an effort to change. They emphasised self-transformation and did not call in the other person. The message was pregnant with a deep and profound spiritual message for inner reflection, deep self-transformation and Sadhana for spiritual growth.

The message from Divine Life Society of South Africa provided a succinct insight into Pujya Swamiji’s life and legacies, his contributions to the spiritual, social, poverty-alleviation, and educational welfare of all, as well as his humanitarian contributions and initiatives. The focus of the message was on our roles and responsibilities, in order to sustain Pujya Swamiji’s legacies. The following excerpts from the message find resonance in this regard.

“Today, we are all beneficiaries of this immense spiritual legacy if we choose to embrace it. The keys to accessing this wealth are faith, obedience, loyalty, devotion, and a strong desire for spiritual growth. To honour a great soul like Pujya Swamiji, we must practise his teachings, chief amongst which are unconditional self-surrender and obedience. He taught that perfect obedience equates to perfect self-surrender, and that it surpasses mere reverence. By adhering to simple principles in our daily lives, be it at home, on the road, or at work, we can enhance our existence. He emphasised that ‘Obedience is the most important law of life’, urging us to observe health rules, road traffic rules, the rules of establishments and institutions, and to reflect on our daily shortcomings.

“Our Divine Master's writings will guide us on this journey. Merely associating with a saint or an ashram is insufficient; we must embody the values taught by our Master, namely serve, love, give, purify and meditate, and live a Divine Life prioritising God. Pujya Swamiji exemplified faith and self-surrender, a theme captured in his first book published in 1996. The title is, Faith and Self-Surrender. … Pujya Swamiji revealed that the insights within came directly from Sri Gurudev as he typed the script without drafts. This booklet promises inspiration for all readers amid life's challenges”.

The Spiritual Darlings’ cultural item, “Pujya Swamiji Says”, comprised enactments of some of Pujya Swamiji’s simple, child-like, yet potent messages that appealed to children and adults. This item was concluded with a musical rendition highlighting the Divine Personality of Pujya Swamiji, the ideal disciple of our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda.

We were fortunate that the sacred launch programme took place within the period of the Maha Kumbha Mela. In observance of this, a delightful and symbolic dance traced the origin of Mother Ganga and Her physical route throughout India, and finally to South Africa, brought here by the grace of Sri Gurudev and Pujya Swamiji. Lord Buddha, Sri Swami Sivananda and Paramhansa Sri Ramakrishna too are honoured for they served Ganga Mata as she Graced Bodhgaya, Rishikesh and Calcutta with Her presence. In the dance item, Pujya Swami Sahajananda, who was compared to King Bhagirath by Sri Swami Sivananda in 1955, is acknowledged for bringing Ganga Rani to South Africa. Knowing how Ganga Mata willingly left Her heavenly abode to save the sons of King Sagar, Sri Gurudev and Pujya Swamiji, wanted to save all of us, their own children. They therefore, convinced Ganga Rani to extend Herself from the heavenly Himalayan peaks of Rishikesh to Southern Africa. The dance re-lives Ganga Rani’s journey from heaven, through the various Ashrams in India, to South Africa. Executed in a professional and entertaining manner, the colourful item added to the divinity and sanctity of the occasion.

The Mayor of Umtshezi, the Honourable Mr Lymon Shelembe, in his address, reflected on his association with Pujya Swami Sahajananda, who built the Sivananda Celukuphiwa School in 2002. He indicated that learners took their lessons under trees prior to Pujya Swamiji’s magnanimous gift to the community. The school has subsequently excelled, having created the foundation for several doctors, engineers and teachers. He recalled that when he was seriously ill, Pujya Swamiji sent him Agnihotra ash, to which he attributed his miraculous recovery. The mayor’s reverence and admiration for Pujya Swamiji were overtly evident in his address.

Of great significance in the Satsang programme was the release of our Centenary Brochure, Sri Swami Sivananda’s Ideal Disciple, a 64-page book, encapsulating the life and legacy of Sri Swami Sivananda and Sri Swami Sahajananda. The message read at the release ceremony, was an apt account of Pujya Swamiji’s greatness, humility and unconditional devotion to our Master, Sri Swami Sivananda. The following excerpts of the message pay credence to this theme.

“One of the forms of our Divine Master’s Grace in this country is beloved Pujya Swami Sahajananda. This Grace manifested and continues to manifest at every step of our inner journey. This will become apparent as you go through the pages of the 100th Birth Anniversary Brochure. You will feel the Grace flowing through every word and every act of Pujya Swamiji’s matchless surrender to the Divine Master. One can only turn to our Divine Master and say: ‘Lord, at every step, we thank Thee for Thy Golden Grace of bequeathing beloved Pujya Swamiji to us’. And that is the story of the life of Pujya Swami Sahajananda, that is the story of Divine Life Society of South Africa, and more poignantly, that is the story of the inner journey of all his devotees.

“Sri Swami Sahajananda’s silent dynamism, magnetic personality and contributions are again evident in Sri Swami Sivananda’s words at Pujya Swamiji’s farewell after his initiation into the holy order of Sannyas on 10 April 1956. The Master said, ‘Swami Sahajananda is styled as the spiritual king of South Africa, Durban. He is also called African Chota Guru. He does not want anything. He is a silent worker. He is a man of renunciation, Vairagya (dispassion) and meditation. He is a very good organiser. He talks little. You have never seen him talking. He thinks much and does much. Such a spiritual Yogi is he. His devotion to his teacher is unique. He has a pure heart. So let us pray for the health of this small Yogi, full of strength. One who can transform the materialistic intellect of the whole of South Africa; what tremendous purity, what tremendous Yogic power, what tremendous meditation and spiritual aura.

“This publication highlights the life and teachings of Pujya Swamiji, his Guru Bhakti and his total surrender to his Guru, Sri Swami Sivananda. We trust that the articles in this brochure will inspire us to grow in our surrender to the Master and kindle a deep spiritual yearning for the Divine. One can see from the initiatives outlined in the brochure that Pujya Swamiji, as Spiritual Head of Divine Life Society of South Africa, was steadfastly focused on spiritual transformation and realisation, not only for Himself, but also for all devotees and seekers. Every ounce of his energy, every drop of his blood, every thought, every feeling and every sensation, every fibre of his being, went towards the achievement of that goal. We owe him a deep debt of gratitude for this shower of Divine Grace and for making manifest in this country the spiritual writings and vision of our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda".

The launch of Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s Birth Centenary in his home-town of Estcourt was a fitting tribute to this gentle spiritual giant of South Africa. What is the significance of this great occasion for us, you and I?  The following words from the brochure release message find resonance, and are a stark reminder to us all: “That we celebrate Pujya Swamiji’s 100th Birth Anniversary this year, and that we will be celebrating many more of his birthdays in future, makes us reminisce, and take cognisance of our own spiritual growth, our commitment to the Mission, our Guru Bhakti and our responsibility towards sustaining Pujya Swamiji’s legacy beyond his centenary celebrations. We can do these by practising Sri Gurudev’s and Pujya Swamiji’s teachings, by increasing our Sadhana, serving the Society unflinchingly. What else? We should study the messages diligently. Precious spiritual jewels are contained in these messages. After a concentrated study let us dive deep within. All the saints and sages tell us that inside each one of us, there is a wealth beyond measure. Let us find that wealth and emulate Pujya Swamiji by enjoying the stupendous peace of God”
